Oman Seaweed project

OMAR. Offshore mariculture in Oman is a collaboration between Port of Duqm S.A.O.C. and DEME Concessions NV with support of the Sultan Qaboos University.

The Special Economic free Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) is known for its abundant fish resources, biodiversity and high level of nutritional building blocks and is therefore qualified as one of the most appropriate and exceptional locations for the development of logistic marine hubs and mariculture business that will help to diversify the economy in Oman.

Our vision is to push value creation forward by developing sustainable solutions in the growing aquaculture market and to put Oman on the global map as an adequate developer, ocean farmer and supplier of high quality seaweed biomass that will change the world on many fronts. Seaweed plays a significant role in fighting climate change by absorbing carbon emission, regenerating marine ecosystems and is used in a large portfolio of sustainable applications (e.g. food, feed, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biofuel, bioplastics etc.).

Our mission is to develop a large-scale offshore seaweed farm that involves local stakeholders in the entire value chain. From research & development, design and engineering, construction, ocean farming up to processing and sales for local markets and/or export purposes. A step-by-step approach will lead to a gradual build-up of the seaweed farm that meets the market demands.

The project development team led by DEME Concessions NV and supported by Sultan Qaboos University is currently conducting a techno-economic feasibility study to explore the potential of seaweed farming in Duqm. Profound fundamental research in the context of literature studies followed by applied research along the Omani coast are the building blocks to move on with implementation of technology by means of offshore demonstration tests. A step-by-step approach will eventually lead the team towards business development and venture creation with local stakeholders. The Port of Duqm will play a key role in the value chain as marine logistic hub.

Project roadmap

2021 - 2023 roadmap

timeline
Profound literature study conducted by the research team has led to the identification of 425 different seaweed species appearing along the Omani coast. 25 species have been identified as most promising and will be further investigated.
Q2-Q3 2021

Fundamental research – literature study

A dive and seaweed collection campaign along the Omani coast will be conducted by the research team to provide more insight in the local conditions and occurrence of the selected seaweeds. Seaweed will be collected and used for further analysis and reproduction purposes.
Q3-Q4 2021

Applied research – Seaweed collection and analysis

A weekly measuring campaign at the designed offshore location will be conducted to monitor the environmental conditions over time. A multiprobe device will be deployed at different depths to provide more insight in the seawater conditions such as but not limited to seawater temperature, nutrient levels, PAR etc. The acquired data will be interpreted and validated and is key to understand the growth cycle of seaweed on this specific location.
2021-2022

Applied research - Local seawater condition monitoring

The collected seaweed species will be further validated in onshore lab infrastructure to reproduce seaweed in controlled conditions. This onshore OMAR unit will be used for scientific research, training and education as well as reproduction of seaweed to facilitate offshore tests and during commercial phase.
Q4 2021

On-land reproduction of seaweed

An offshore demonstration test will be conducted to monitor the growth behavior of the selected seaweed and the associated tools and materials at the designated offshore location.
2022

Offshore demonstration test

All data acquired from previous work will lead to a go/no go decision for a first full scale test before commercial operations. Local stakeholder will be attracted to the entire value chain before first industrial deployment.
2023 - …

Start-up phase

OMAR updates

DEME Concessions NV has signed a cooperation agreement with Sultan Qaboos University in May 2021 to establish intensive support and assistance during fundamental and applied research. Both parties will collaborate intensively on the potential of seaweed farming in Duqm and Oman as a whole.

July 2021

The research team consisting of DEME Concessions NV and Sultan Qaboos University returned from a successful 2-weeks trip in Oman to monitor and collect seaweed along the Omani coast. A Belgian consultant and seaweed expert that joined the trip has never seen before such a large variety of seaweeds and rich biodiversity. The research team concludes that Oman has potential for large-scale seaweed cultivation but more applied research is required.

21 September 2021

DEME Concessions NV has successfully kicked off the measuring campaign at the designated offshore location. The water column will be monitored on a weekly basis for at least 6 months and analyzed if local conditions are appropriate for seaweed cultivation.
